The food pyramid is a graphical representation of the healthy foods needed by a person to be healthy. Due to this, it is easily understood by children and adults alike.
The food pyramid contains six different layers of food groups in the shape of a pyramid. While you should have large helpings of the foods that are at the base of the pyramid, the foods at the top of the pyramid should be consumed sparingly. Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates should be the staple food elements. For this, plenty of whole grains, brown rice and other cereals should be taken. This is the reason that they are placed at the base of the food pyramid.
Vegetables. Vegetables form an important part of the food pyramid containing minerals, fiber and vitamins. The food pyramid recommends that you should take 3 to 5 servings of fresh foods daily both in raw and boiled forms.
Fruits. Fruits are essential for a healthy body. They are a rich source of vitamins, fibers and antioxidants. 2 to 4 servings of both citrus and non-citrus fruits should be taken daily.
Dairy Products. Milk is an important source of vitamins. It also contains plenty of calcium, which is an essential ingredient for the growth of the bones and teeth. Due to this, women during pregnancy should take milk products. One should take 2 to 3 servings of dairy products like cheese, curd, yogurt daily.
Meat, Fish and Poultry Products. They are rich in protein, which is needed by the body for the building of the muscle mass. Fish contain omega 3 fatty acid. So, 2 to 3 servings of them should be taken.
